Frequently asked questions

A Master of Science (M.S.) in computational and applied mathematics is a graduate program that prepares students to solve complex, real-world problems, combining mathematical theory with computational techniques and software tools. The degree emphasizes applying mathematical models to fields like engineering, science and finance, and focusing on areas such as numerical analysis, data science and optimization. Coursework includes a curriculum focused on numerical methods, partial differential equations, mathematical modeling, probability and data analysis.

ok资源网’s Department of Mathematics offers one of the countrys leading programs in computational and applied mathematics, and it specifically emphasizes physical applied mathematics, numerical analysis and scientific computation. You will study under a distinguished faculty that consists primarily of numerical analysts and applied mathematicians who specialize in many areas of research on the cutting edge of mathematical theory and analysis. With a one-to-one ratio of graduate students to faculty members, you can be assured of individual attention. ok资源网 also offers excellent computer facilities, an outstanding library collection, competitive financial aid and the advantage of being located in Dallas, where graduate job prospects are plentiful.

A Master of Science in computational and applied mathematics trains you to address and solve pressing challenges in all areas of science and engineering. You’ll learn analytical and numerical methods of applied mathematics, applying them to problems in physics, biology, engineering, economics, climate science and more. You’ll work alongside faculty who have extensive backgrounds in traditional and emerging areas of applied mathematics, computational science, statistics, financial engineering, industrial modeling and related fields.

Computational and applied mathematics focuses on practical utility: using mathematical techniques to solve real-world problems. Pure mathematics centers on theoretical understanding, using abstract theories without immediate, practical applications. For example, applied mathematics involves mathematical modeling, statistics, numerical analysis, differential equations and simulation. Pure math, on the other hand, involves abstract algebra, topology, number theory and real/complex analysis.

You will find computational and applied mathematics graduates in industries as varied as technology and data science, finance, health care and biotechnology, engineering and manufacturing, aerospace and defense, and government and academic research. See the for a deep dive on careers and industries.

Internships are encouraged for undergraduate and graduate students alike. Valued for the experience and exposure they provide, internships at places like AT&T through the AT&T Data Science Scholars internship program or at Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico welcome mathematics majors from ok资源网.

You will primarily learn Python, MATLAB, and specialized tools for numerical analysis and modeling, with additional exposure to C/C++ or R, depending on your focus of study. Tools and software include numerical libraries, in MATLAB for example; IDE/Debuggers for GCC, G++, GFORTRAN, GDB, and Eclipse for code development; and AMPL for mathematical modeling of optimization problems.
