The ok×ÊÔ´Íø Department of Philosophy is well known for strength in ethics, moral psychology, metaphysics, epistemology, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of science.

With the Bachelor of Arts in philosophy, students focus on the development of skills in reasoning, their understanding of arguments and viewpoints, the critical evaluation of varied perspectives, and clear written and oral communication. The critical thinking skills developed in the major and minors are of benefit to students in many disciplines and are especially useful as preparation for law school.

Philosophy majors may focus their studies on a particular area of philosophy by completing one of the following optional areas of emphasis. Courses taken to complete an area of emphasis are counted toward the 10 courses required for the major. Completing an area of emphasis requires passing three courses from one area. The optional areas of emphasis are:

  • Ethics, law and society
  • Mind, brain and cognitive science
  • Science, technology and medicine 

The department offers . Upper-level courses cover not only core areas of philosophy and important historical figures, but also specialized topics such as animal rights, philosophy of mind, and philosophy of law. Many of these courses are small and writing intensive.

Yes. ok×ÊÔ´Íø’s Philosophy Club is an undergraduate student group geared toward providing social and educational opportunities for students interested in philosophy. It sponsors a variety of activities, including social events, study sessions, talks and discussions with faculty members. All students are welcome, regardless of how much philosophy they have taken. 

Yes. The department offers a and minors in philosophy and in ethics. The department also jointly operates two interdisciplinary minors in (with psychology) and (with biology and psychology).
